There are many opinions regarding maternity clothes, there will be someone who tells you that they are essential and others will say that you do not need them at all. I have tried to make do with the minimum, but these trousers have been very useful.

Searching through my wardrobe, I found these two pairs of trousers that I barely wear. So I said, let´s give a go and try to adapt them as maternity ones and if it does not work, it is not going to be a big deal either. The first tutorial is for a pair of over the bump trousers and the second for under the bump ones, so you have a choice.

The materials are going to be the same for both tutorials: trousers, matching knit fabric and elastic.

PANTALONES POR ENCIMA DE LA BARRIGA

OVER THE BUMP TROUSERS

Try the trousers on marking on the centre front under your bump and drafting a curve line up to the waistband.

Fold the trousers by the centre front and cut out the marked piece. There is no need to alter the back of the trousers, so make sure that you only cut the front bit.

If your trousers have a fly front like the ones I have, it might be a good idea to sew it. You are not going to use it and this way you ensure that it does not open while you are wearing them.

Draw the front pattern for the knit fabric taking into account at what height you want the trousers to sit (in my case under the bust approximately) leaving some allowance for the hem with the elastic and for your bump to grow. For the width I took as reference the piece that I cut from the trousers and I decreased up to the top to match the under the bust measurement.

The back pattern does not need to be as high in the centre as the front one, so I draw the side to match the front one and I decreased the centre lenght to where I thought it would be comfy.

I am sorry but I did not take pictures of the next steps. I just sewed the front and back pieces together with the overlocker, I finished the top of the knitted piece with the overlocker where I sewed elastic to match my under the bust measurement and finally I joined the knitted piece to the trousers and this is the final result.

Y la parte trasera.

And the back.

And here I am with my 8 months bump that still fits in the trousers.

PANTALONES POR DEBAJO DE LA BARRIGA

UNDER THE BUMP TROUSERS

For this pair of trousers I just followed the tutorial by See Kate Sew that you can find here. The only difference it is that I added elastic to the top of the pockets so it would stay in place.

This are my pockets in knit fabric and the elastic that I sewed at the top.

Remallé los bordes superiores.

I overlocked the top of the pockets.

I sewed the elastic with a zig zag stitch.

Y folded the fabric over the elastic and sewed another zig zag seam on top of it to keep it in place.

And the pockets are ready to be sewn like in the tutorial.

Finally my finished trousers with the stretchy pockets. I must say that I am wearing the over the bump ones more often as I find them more comfy. I need to wear these ones with braces or they keep falling down lol.

The title of this post should be how to get a pattern and do your own thing. I started with a simple blouse pattern without darts and boat neckline and I ended with a round neckline, bust and back neckline darts. The pattern is from the Coudre c'est facile Hors-série magazine from which I have already made this blouse. I bought the Swiss dot cotton fabric at the Stitching, Sewing and Hobbycraft show in London last year.

Camisa abotonada detrás TGBSB ::: Button-back blouse TGBSB

When I bought the first The Great British Sewing Bee book, this blouse was one of my favourite items and I was a bit disappointed when I saw that the pattern was not included. Years later, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that the Love Sewing magazine was offering the pattern for free.

The pattern has a yoke with piping, another technique to learn, full sleeves gathered at the cuffs and the buttons at the back, so I had another opportunity to practice the buttonholes.

I bought the fabric for £1 per meter at the Green Street market. It is quite lightweight but handling it with patience I did not have any issues. I cut it on the rug at one layer as it is quite slippery and I believe that some people cover their cutting table with a fitted sheet as it works well too. I added a strip of interfacing to the buttonhole area to reinforce it. This time I used a narrow hem and the result was much better than my previous lightweight blouse.

I recently enrolled in a course at the Greenwich Community College to learn how to sew stretch fabrics. We were only a few doing the course so I'm afraid they cancelled it after 3 weeks, just in time to finish my dress.

The pattern came with the Prima magazine from May 2014, which worries me a bit in terms of my time frame to complete projects, but as we say in Spain, better late than never.

The design is quite simple, it only has the gathering detail under the bust and at the back, which is very flattering. It is made by shirring, which was not as complicated as I thought it was going to be. My course tutor recommended me to elastic tightly but in some blogs advise you to do is loosely. I just tried something in between and it worked in the first attempt, so just test it on a scrap and adjust if required.

This is the shirring from the wrong side of the fabric. I sewed 4 rows using the width of the presser foot as a guide. As you can see, I sewed a continuous line pivoting and sewing a couple of stitches between rows as my tutor recommended and it worked. I backstitched at the start and the end with no issues to secure the threads.

Seguí el tutorial de Made by Rae.

The neckline is not great, I think I pulled the neckband too much and I did not control the overlocker well. It is the first one anyway so it will get better with practice. I followed the tutorial from Made by Rae.

I sewed the hem with a twin needle.

 Este es el delantero.

This is the front.

Y la espalda.

And the back.

Threadcount shirtdress ::: Vestido camisero Threadcount

I love shirtdresses, they are flattering and great for this weather. I found the perfect pattern last year with the Love Sewing magazine.

This pattern is supposed to be for beginners but as it has a colllar, cuffs and the buttonholes I am not so sure. I took my time making the dress and searched for tutorials as required. This one from Four Square Walls was really helpful to make the collar. I followed the instructions from the Alison Smith's Dressmaking book for the cuffs and for the seam pockets, as with my Burda dress, this tutorial from Megan Nielsen did the job. The buttonholes turned out much better than I expected with my superbasic Alfa sewing machine. I just followed the sewing machine manual, and as Momita advised, I practised on a scrap of the fabric.

Vestido Burda 1/17 ::: Burda dress 1/17

Wedding party! We were looking forward to a family wedding this year and I decided to sew my dress. I chose the 112 dress from the January edition of Burda magazine.

I specifically bought the magazine for this pattern. I loved the flounces which seem to be everywhere this year. I made a couple of alterations: 3/4 sleeves and seam pockets. By the way, my mother was shocked with the idea of adding pockets to a smart dress but I do not think you could tell and they really useful. I followed this great tutorial by Megan Nielsen for the pockets.

The fabric is from Etsy and the button from Hobbycraft. I followed this tutorial from el baúl de las costureras to make the button loop.

And here I am with my dress. I have sent the picture to the Burda lovers contest, wish me luck!

I have made two blouses using this pattern. The first one was a bit big so I passed it on to my mother. Being a Japanese pattern I assumed it would be small but that was not the case, even in the smallest size I had to add an extra pleat at the centre front to adjust the neckline. Anyway, I was made aware of my fitting issues so I bought the book Fit for real people which has been very helpful so far.

The pattern is from the Coudre c'est facile magazine, a special issue with lots of projects.

There are a couple of nice shortcuts in the instructions like finishing the neckline with bias binding before sewing one of the shoulder seams and same for binding the sleeves before sewing the sleeve seams.

I bought the fabric in Leicester. Finally, here am I in the Design Museum wearing my blouse.
